My son, when he was 16, wanted a 914 - he liked the pictures on my desk from the late 70s. So, as a responsible father, we found one pulled out of a garage in Rhode Island that had been sitting since 88. He welded (on the job learning) the floor panels and the hell hole panels. Also helped me do a Dr. Evil 915 trans job. Thanks Doc! He is in engineering school and is a 3D printer and laser cutter monster. He made these; one for me and one for his mother.   |

I hope both you and he realize what he will be...
My son Bryan graduated 12/12/24 with a ME degree. He's been a gearhead and fabricating with me for 20 years. He is 36 now and put his wife through a master's in biology first. His last job, an "internship" with GKN, was running and modifying the largest titanium 3D printer in the world. He's been deep in 3D printing for years. He can do 3 different processes at his house. GKN didn't have the budget to hire him as an engineer this quarter. He ran the rocket program at Tarleton last year. Built an 11' rocket and a drone that was to be deployed from it. he's currently looking for a job but... He's 1 out of 10,000. His classmates and instructors were not even close to his abilities as a fabricator. His last boss at GKN, Leon (also a Porsche nut) told him "Don't be a stranger, stop by anytime, if you need to use the shop, it's yours!" And "as soon as they give me more money, I'll be calling". The shop in question has a bit over $500,000,000 in equipment (mostly to work Ti). Leon is completely on board with making an adaptor plate (out of aluminum) to put any engine we want onto a Boxster 6 speed for my 914 conversion. Current possible employment includes Bell Helicopters (UAVs), US Navy Research and Development (water-based Ti drones) Toyota R&D (engines), GKN, SpaceX, and others. His 3D printing experience and his fabrication abilities are worth MORE than the ME degree to these folks. Without them they wouldn't even consider him. He will start at a 50% higher salary than the other newbie engineers he graduated with. An engineer that can fabricate and wrench is STUPID rare now-a-days... My son has "assimilated" my 91 MR2 turbo project, last things he's done to it is hand port the cylinder head. It was his first "head job". (IMG:style_emoticons/default/av-943.gif) It will go 350whp on 93 and just under 500 on E/85... Sounds like you have one too! My advice is to document your son's abilities as best you can. I like the hoodies as well! |
