I just finished rebuilding a 912 4 speed transmission # 902/0 with the proper gears A,H,Q,X . This is an early aluminum case and I believe it can be converted to a 914 side shifter. I have heard that the 4 speed was preferred for high torque ( V8) conversion because of the now first gear is not hung out to the rear of the mid plate bearing where it has no support.

I do not see how it can be converted to 914 use. As you say, it is an aluminum case and therefore the magnesium 914 end cap cannot be properly attached AFAIK. If it was a mag case 901/902, then yes it would be possible with some modifications.

Also, when you convert a 914 to a 4 speed for use with a V-8, you get a taller 1st gear. The 901 factory 4 speed has an A first gear. If you convert a 5 speed, you get a F first gear. The V-8 likes the taller first gear.

A stock 912 transmission will give you four speeds in reverse and one forward.
Unless you run it upside down or put the ring gear on the other side, is that even possible or recommended? |
