Does anyone know the height of the lettering used for the chassis number in the trunk? Or, could measure it, please? I'm trying to replicate the Karmann number on my LE but this trunk was replaced by the PO. I have a 4mm, 6mm, and 10mm punch set. So, it'll probably be 8mm (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Thanks.

The original trunk floor is still in Elwood, so I will measure them after work and get back to you asap.

They are 10mm in my original 1973 teener. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) I haven't seen them in years and didn't realize they were that big!

Sweet Jesus! What luck! Thanks, Jamie!

Clay, Interested if you can confirm this, as well. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

A pic could probably help as well. Hard to see in the above photo that I pulled from an very old thread. Thanks!

I just walked out into the garage and took this:

Funny.. I work with LOTS of metric stuff all the time, but all of my tape measures are in inches. It is about 3.8 of an inch, which is 9.5 mm. But it was an eyeball and tape measure thing, so I figure 10 mm is right.

Fred, you should have known they were 10 mm. They were thinking of us at our age and wanted to be sure we could read them.....LOL (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif)

One question could be: what is the width? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

Clay, what year is Elwood? Your chassis number appears to be located in the middle - not to the pass. side by the sway bar reinforcement tab. Interesting (IMG:style_emoticons/default/huh.gif)

Can anyone else post pictures of their trunk numbers. My chassis number is 7 digits. Are all 7 stamped?

I can confirm 10mm height and 7 digit number plus position relative to sway bar mount on rear passenger side of trunk. This from survivor LE.

This is the 1970 location, and the 1970 914/6 series # with the year position missing.

Apparently the number on the six chassis was stamped in a different location.

There is surface rust obscuring some of the letters. I am hesitant to take it off.

Well I won't call it a complete failure but....

Attached Image

It's not easy to get a hammer in here and get the numbers straight. I used a piece of tape as a bottom line, which helped but I couldn't hit with enough force to really make a good imprint. Probably needs to be done before the piece goes in the car. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

If I can't get something behind it to actually imprint the numbers better, I may abandon the effort. I'm thinking I might use a bottle jack and some wood blocks to provide support from underneath. If so, I'll grind/hammer what I did and start over.

They should be oriented East/West, not North/South to be like original. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)
