Have now removed the rocker panels and the front/rear valences to have them repainted. Currently the paint on all of those parts has what I would call a "medium texture" - the texture and gloss levels vary bit because I think the various parts may have been repainted at different times by different people.

The manual just states "dull black". Doesn't say anything about texture (or degree of "dull"-ness for that matter). The roof is textured of course, I think that may have actually done in the fiberglass originally. But it does not say anything about texture on the lower parts. The manual also includes the non-chrome bumpers on '73+ Euro models in the "dull black" description.

So, texture or no texture? Texture is often put on to hide imperfections. I remember "back in the day" when as an ID modelmaker I used to paint parts with 2K polyurethane paint (Polane, highly toxic) to get that "IBM typwriter" texture popular back then. IBM painted their metal Selectric typwriter frames with a thick, coarse-textured coating of the stuff to hide all the imperfections from their metal fab.

Mine have a minimal texture on the rockers, could be “Orange Peel”. But you have to look close to see it, no where near as big as what is on the top. Valances are the same. My bumpers were painted the body color and then painted black. I never noticed any texture on them. My bumpers are off my 1972.

So, texture or no texture?

Lot's of existing threads on rockers and valance coating / paint. Depends on how much effort you want to get to make it original. I think this is the most comprehensive originality thread. There are others...

OK, thanks guys... Looks like a light "orange peel" style texture will be fine. Will talk to my paint guy about whether he wants to use an undercoat texture first, then overcoat.

Currently mine look like this (Front, Rear, Right, Left). Think they're somewhat too matte - possibly due to age.

"Original" is not really important, nice looking is...

pretty sure they shot them with schutz first then the black over that.
its satin black.

i believe it might have been the same with the bumpers.
how they got the orange peel? but its a differently scaled and textured orange peel on the bumpers.

i still have orig paint on mine. thats my reference.
looked at closely the rockers do not exactly match the valences in terms of orange peel texture. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) they probably got done in batches separately at different times. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
stockpiled? and installed on cars.

EDIT
good topic on finishes for rockers etc.
