I am changing oil and got stuck at the oil strainer. The outer piece has come off and i have removed the paper washer that was under it. It was not easy to pull the outer piece off.
I removed what I will call an odd nut that connects to a stud that is now sticking out of the retained portion of the oil strainer. The strainer appears to be aluminum. I can not dislodge this inner piece to get to the strainer and to complete the job as intented.
Is this a common issue? Any solution/ Naturally not forcing the issue.

It is a replaceable part, about 20 bucks. Maybe someone put a sealer between the case and the flange on the strainer.

If you try prying out the strainer, be careful not to gouge or scratch the seating surface in the recess in the engine case.

The other thing that happens is they get hung up on the stud threads. Cheap strainers aren’t made well and often have crappy fit at the studs with sharp edges getting deformed into the threads. Sometimes useful to spin it as if you are unthreading the strainer - even though it’s not threaded. Attached Image

as noted above, there is a danger in prying with scratching the sealing surfaces.

you can use a screwdriver, but be careful where you put the fulcrum point

you can also use a SMALL blade tool to get between the opening in the strainer and pull straight down

good luck!

Yeah, been there as well. There's nothing secret holding it on, the flange and and gasket are just stuck to the case. Just take your time and work it free. As already noted, if you damage it a replacement won't break the bank. It has been a while since I had a strainer get really stuck, but I believe I used a gasket scraper to get it free.

bread knife under the edge of the strainer.
the kind of knife you use to butter bread.
something we do in the ex british empire. butter bread that is.

did it a million times changing oil on my type 3.
you had to take the whole plate off to drain the oil.
no drain plug. same with a beetle. you had to undo all the perimeter bolts.
the strainer would enivetablly want to stick somewhere around its edge.

so i learned how to get that strainer off gently.
because it was always going to go back on after you cleaned it.
and the old bread knife would do the trick.

don't forget with a type 4 when you put it all back together, the bolt (#16) in the middle that holds the plate back up is precisely torqued. do not overtighten under any circumstances. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
