Hi to everyone. I just picked up a 1970 914/4. It needs a lot of work. It came with the engine and transmission out of the car. The engine was under a tree covered with some plastic. It turns but after about a quarter turn something is stopping it inside.
The engine serial starts with EA, which I think makes it a 1972 or 1973 1.7. Definitely not original to the car. No starter, no alternator, no exhaust, no FI. The transmission was in the frunk. I'll be tearing it down in a couple of weeks. I'd like to make some mild performance improvements. Looking for reliability rather then horsepower. A budget build if that's even possible with one of these. Feel free to chime in with crank, cam, valve possibilities. Looking forward to learning from this forum and sharing my experience here. Nice first post
The blocks are the same. So at least you have something to build if you get the machine work done. Easy to build a bigger motor with crank rods and pistons for mild. |

A quick look at the hell hole shows someone did a recent rebuild of the area and didn't do a super great job. It will need attention. The PO said the jack points were "soft" which means they're probably gone. Gonna strip out the interior and try to get it into the air and get a good look in a couple of weeks. |

You are at the right place for any and I mean ANY of your 914 related questions. There are extremely knowledgeable people here always willing to give great help. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif) Your shell seems clean, but as mentioned, you should take a close look before diving into the engine build. Of course, engine is the fun part but unfortunately, the shells can require a lot of work. Plenty of built threads that you can refer to if you get deep in the sheet metal. We are suckers for pictures (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) feel free to add some more… Phone pictures are too large, you need to resize them using something like Paint to about 300k. Welcome and good luck. If the engine turns reasonably easy, especially with spark plugs removed, it may be a dropped valve. Don't force it to keep turning.

I’ve seen these engines stuck with just some carbon at TDC, since the motor is out it’s easy to pull the heads and check it out. |
