I am building my second 914 and putting a 2.4 six in and building it with hopes of building it out to a hotter 2.5 long stroke next winter... So I am putting in a external cooler up front. I am looking for the best ways to run the lines.. I dont want to run GT hardlines. What did you do?? Pictures welcome!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Im gonna run hard lines.... but am interested in the photos of getting it from the frunk to the back.... where to cut etc...

I know some people run them inside the car, I want to avoid that if possible....

Watching. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif)

I was just going to post the same question. I want to run the lines down the passenger side. I am thinking of using -16 braided lines or possible making some stainless lines to go under the rocker cover. I would like to go into the space where the gas tank sits and then go into the frunk. The oil cooler I am using has the connections on the passenger side. Interested in how other have done this and what they would do different.

To each his own, but I installed AN12 steel braided lines down the drivers side instead of the hard line over 35 years ago with no issues. I referenced the phase sight as a reference. https://pbase.com/9146gt/factory_9146gt_parts

On my 2nd Six, 3.0, we ran braided SS lines up the passenger side behind the rocker covers, into the trunk, and then to the 2 VW 411 type oil coolers, one at each foglight opening. Car never over heated. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

I ran solid lines under the chassis on one of my cars. It worked fine but always felt it was vulnerable. It was 3/4” stainless that would have never ruptured GT lines just work

OK, my 6 number 41, when I got it, had this type of oil cooling up front. PMB kept that system just cleaned it all up. Trotman Thermostat, AN fittings with braded SS lines, cutout on the Floor like the GT and 916 cars had (note the red drawings) The bumper was opened as shown (the PO had just the air flowing through the fog light grills and that was enough air to keep it cool. It had a 69s 2.5 short stroke engine that was in there in the 70s, That Engen was reunited back to the 911s That it came down the line with.) I got my 6 Eng. case that it came down the line with and 2 Porsche guys ended Up very happy. I went with chrome front bumper and flared glass valance.

Perhaps I should be more specific
I am running a PMB cooler up front with the intake and exit to the cooler on the drivers side.. I would like to run braideded lines up the exterior of the drivers longs, BUt am not sure where I should cut into the body to run them into the the frunkI I will use an oe 6 tank and a mocal thermostat in line..
WHat size lines did you use? What fittings did you use for the oil tank? Will I need Porsche fittings for the tank and engine? Are they available anywhere?
Thanks in advance for your input!

@pete-stevers pete-stevers

The braded lines run from the back drivers side along the drivers side, come up under the left wheel well, fastened to body and then with 90 degree AN fittings go into the frunk to Oil cooler and come back to tank in reverse way. See the red circles. If you do not want to use Bens GT lines, this is the way Trotman did it back in the day. If my set up was not in my car when I got it , I would of gone with hard lines. The two holes circled together are for the 90s. the small holes are for the bracket. Back in 07 Ben was not making the hard lines and they cost a fortune. I may have some pictures of the lines as they where but you should get a good idea how this kind of set up works.

You can get all that info from PMB as far as the size. There is more that one way to do this.

On my 3.2 car, I ran a stainless line up the passenger side to the front cooler and then a second line from the cooler, down the driver side, to the oil tank. It’s a very clean setup since no line has to cross over or under the engine.

The GT style car that I’m currently building is using Ben’s GT hard lines. - Because they look great, work great and that’s what I wanted for this car.

There is no best way to do it. And really no cheap way either. The fittings, though not expensive, add up. I think Ben can make a kit that’s tried and true and has most everything needed to plumb the system. That can be a reasonable priced way to go since you aren’t buying things that don’t work together and then buying more stuff to make it work. BTDT.

Don’t be surprised if you are in for $3k +\- when you add it all up.

Thanks for all the responses. And sorry to hijack the original posters thread. I purchased Ben's hard lines but decided I did not want to run the lines thru the passenger compartment. My oil cooler I am using has the inlet and outlet on the passenger side. I am looking to run lines up and back on the passenger side. I would also consider one up the passenger and one back down the drivers side. I do not plan on going into the Frunk at the very front of the car. Most of the installs I have seen that run lines down the passenger side come out into the frunk at the passenger side rear. This requires going into the space occupied by the gas tank and then coming into the frunk. What I have not found pictures of is where people go into the gas tank area on the passenger fender. Would love some pics. What looks to make the most sense is to go in at the top rear of the passenger fender and then down under the tank to come into the frunk. Any pics of this type of configuration and comments welcomed.

john
