Can anyone tell me what this is? '75 1.8L mounted behind a black steel bubble low on the frunk core support in front of the fuel tank (driver's side). I thought it might be the fuel filter, but it just doesn't look right.

That's the fuel pump, the fuel filter is upstream of that connected to the line that comes from the tank.

Tank --> Fuel Filter --> Fuel Pump --> to the fuel lines to the back of the car.

OK, thanks folks. That makes a ton of sense. It turns out that what I thought was the fuel pump was actually the dryer cannister for my dealer installed AC. I need to get my glasses fixed.

Now, to get to the fuel filter, do I have to pull out the pump or is there an easier way to get to it?

Remove the fuel pump from the access hole, and you will see the factory Square filter mounted on 2 metal strips. In the following pic you can see the metal strips I mention next to my aftermarket Pre fuel pump HERE:

I moved my pump and fuel filter near the steering rack. I can just drop the steering rack cover and have easy access. No more worrying about lines kinking.

Fuel pump in a favorable location, except that I tend to kink hoses anyway.
