I could use some help with a DPD aftermarket A/C system I bought years ago, but never got around to installing because of my wife's health problems. I live in Texas, so A/C is a necessity during the 8 months of summer here.
I'm looking for pictures of the compressor mounted to the engine and pictures of the mounting bracket. I think I might be missing part of the bracket itself. I realize how slim the chances of finding any info is since these systems were kind of rare, but any help or leads to information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

I'm not sure if this is the DPD system or which it may be..
It gives a descent over view though. I believe I still have original aftermarket bracketry that I'm not gonna be using, if you need something (in Texas too). Attached image(s)

That is the first decent side mount system I've seen.
It's using a drop-dead dependable Sanden compressor, and it's driven by a serpentine belt. I'd use that in a heartbeat and I'm a picky anal bitch! For those who don't know I run an Automotive AC specialist shop in Granbury Texas. That is what I would have built had I decided to stay T4. That looks NICE!!!! There was another version that used a top mount where the later air pump mount was. No sheet metal cutting in engine compartment. No pictures though

It used the off-the-shelf Sanden mount with a couple pieces welded on to mount to the fan shroud. It uses a custom machined pulley extension that bolted to the crank/fan like the smog pump setup.
My understanding is the modern Sanden comp is small enough to not need the body side shroud/seal cut into. There was another version that used a top mount where the later air pump mount was. No sheet metal cutting in engine compartment. No pictures though DLee makes AC kit |

I have an older DLee-sourced top mount bracket that I welded together for my Sanden 508. His more recent mounts look to be more sturdy, which I think it needed. Two things I can tell you about this mount 1) it works great, no cuts; 2) the bolts will rattle out if you don't use locktite (yes, I'm a dumbass (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) ). @Ninja commented on this when he worked on my system a while back. I later discovered the issue when I pulled my engine. I plan to tap a larger diameter bolt into the air shroud up front and might modify the mount to make it a bit more secure.

Fred's top mount was "floppy" at idle. You could see stuff moving!
I'd worry about what it was doing at full steam 3500 RPM... I think the problem is limited by good mounting points on the top of the engine. When designing compressor mounts expect 5 HP worth of stress. The normal side mount position has much meatier mount locations. Now, the normal mount position places the compressor for reverse rotation, the old York style didn't care about direction. Many compressors are specific regarding rotation due to thrust bearing orientation. That Sanden is not. Most compressors will actually function driving them backwards, the touchy ones will die EARLY! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ninja.gif) Edit: The pic above shows a standard direction mounted Sanden. I'm not sure there is enough room in a 914, especially for a standard (full size) Sanden. I was planning a smaller version Sanden mounted on the original York mount (as a base/modified) and staying reverse rotation. |

Unfortunately for me, I'm still using the fuel injection so it won't fit. I've been leaning toward dual Webers though. Did you have to modify the engine to use the them (a new cam or anything)? Where would I get a DLee-sourced top mount bracket? Thanks for you post and the photo! |

Where would I get a DLee-sourced top mount bracket? Here's the classic thread that Doug created on A/C systems. You can pm him directly or through his "Rusty Acres" business (see signature line in his first post) Doug's A/C System, R&D/Build Thread |
