Bought my current 914 6 years ago and the horn never worked. Finally got around to figuring out why yesterday.

Long story short:

Nothing hacked (thank goodness!), still uses the factory relay.
Steering column was converted to 924 or MK1 giving me intermittent wipers, accessory position etc.
PO simply never took the wire from the horn button and plugged it to the relay.

Problem solved, except, my horn sounds like a dying Goose, it's terrible.

Thought about the Hella Supertone red horns, found an older thread where folks seem to like them and they bolt right up.

Any other bolt-in options people like? I have a single horn, but could install a dual system.

I bought a set of those Hella super tones for my 69 subie swap VW bug a couple years back. They were a very high tone and not as loud as my single horn on the 914. Not masculine at all. I ended up not using them. They are the same size as the 914 though, and would bolt in easily.

In early bumpered cars the depth behind the bumper is the limiting factor for horn options.
IMO when you have a correctly operating OE Hi-Lo tone horn setup its plenty loud!
I forget if your car is equipped with BUB's or not.

@914werke

BUB's, if you have a set of dual horns, maybe the easiest option? Lemme know.

I was able to fit a pair of HELLA Twin Tone trumpet horns behind my ‘74 bumper with my own hardware. They are not louder than the originals, but do have a nicer tone. But if you want louder, I think you have to mount some air-type horns somewhere else…

Dan,

For both of my 914s I've purchased original, reconditioned horns from AA.

My roller didn't come with horns so because I had them I used mk3 VW Golf ones ,free, loud compact and bolted straight on ,the other good thing is they use waterproof 2 pin plugs which I cut of the VW horn loom, they were easy to adapt.
Cheers.

I went with Hellas. The sounds a little bit Euro beep-beep but get the job done.

After two people made left turns in front of me I asked for a set of loud Hella horns.
This was what I got, 400hz - 500hz. Easy install. Did I mention they are loud:
