Thing is, I need almost all of the hardware (clips, springs, retainers, etc..) as well since a lot of mine is missing or in bad shape, and I didn't see it on PMB's website.

I need some local assistance desperately.

This week I took my wheels / tires off to have them balanced. I figured I may as well check the rear brakes while the wheels are off, since I was hearing some brake grinding noises. I discovered that the rear pads on the drivers side were past shot. I ordered some pads and retainers from O'Reilly's just to bet it back on the road and they would arrive today. Well, they arrived. Evidently multiple superseded part numbers resulted in pads that are the right shape but physically too large. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

I need at a minimum 1 pair of used pads and 2 retaining spring clips. A set of used or new rear pads, a complete rear brake hardware set and 1 good used rotor would be ideal.

There's a good chance I may be selling my DD Lincoln Navigator today. My 914 is my only other car, hence the urgency. Any local parts above that I could pick up today would be immensely appreciated! Anywhere within 1-2 hours from me would work.

How far off are those new pads? If not too much, maybe you just need to retract the pistons a little bit more to make room for the pads.

If you get desperate, you can also use a grinder to thin down the pad material a bit. Just be aware that you will end up with an uneven face that will take a while to bed in. Make sure to wear a filter mask if you do this.

The "wrong" pads that O'Reilly's had were the exact-ish same ones that Perry Kiehl offered me from his stash.

Are my calipers some weirdo PN or has superseded pad PN's led to a pad that is too big for 914's?

My existing pad (or what's left of it) is on top, Perry's is the middle one and the O'Reilly's one is on the bottom.

Those top pads look weird!

If the left side are still decent you might have a caliper issue.

The square cut O-rings lose their ability to retract the pistons when they get old.

When new/good they slightly retract the piston when fluid pressure is released.

It's not much, .002"-.003" but if they are rock hard, they leave the pads solidly against the rotor causing excessive wear/brake dragging.

It's a bit like "riding the brakes".

Front calipers are easy to rebuild, rears are NOT!

The biggest issue with my 75 when I purchased it was one of the rear calipers did exactly this and trashed both the pads and the rotor.

That very well may be the case.

I've already bought all 4 brake hoses to install, hoping that maybe the brake hose on that caliper is failing internally and causing the dragging.

I think I've cracked the code using Rockauto as a muti-vendor and part # resource.

It appears that somewhere along the way mfg's and or vendors got cheap / lazy / whatever and threw the front and rears together as the same part # and or used different part #'s for the same part. There were several vendors on Rockauto that did this, as did O'Reilly's and several other vendors. I though I was ordering rear pads form O'Reilly's but received (bigger) front pads.

I did find some pads that actually looked like the rear pads I have / took out of my car. Using those mfg's part #'s I did an internet search for pads. Turns out that not only is 4000003000 is a rear pad for a 914, it's also the front pad for a 1969 VW Fastback and K-Ghias as well!

I went back in to Rockauto to search for pads for a 1969 VW fastback, and voila! I found the exact same pad part # at $14.84, and... there's a kit version, part # 4000003002 that includes the hardware at $18.36!

I also dug around on Rockauto and finally found the 914 brake hardware kits, but only on 1974 and earlier 914's, not 75' or 76's. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif)

Another 914 rear brake pad part # is 1551003000. A search for that one popped up on the AutoNation parts website with pics, a full description, all dimensions (that match my pads!) and a list of 100+ other vehicles that pad (supposedly) fits! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

All this is subject to verification, but the last part # dimensions on AutoNation look spot on! I'm ordering the VW Fastback kit from Rockauto and see how it goes.

So, those pads are smaller than the "rear pads" you got from Perry and O'reilley's ?
Any guesses why that is? - I'm confused..
