its there on all the cars. 4 and 6. and all years (at least up to 74)
i had a look at mine from underneath. its an empty hole. just below rear trunk floor. not sure about bumper side. would have to get bumper off. but don't think there is a grommet or anything in it. my car is original and unrestored. can't see it had any obvious purpose regarding anything to do with fitment of components. stabbing a guess. could be two things. 1. its in exactly the same place as the towing hook reinforcement etc on lhs. there was a plan early on to produce a rhd 914 beginning 1972. could be that the hole is there for fitting those parts to the body for rhd models? but it never happened - plans for rhd 914s was dropped. 2, its a manufacture hole. for holding the rear panel in the body jig. one each side. and the lhs one has a double purpose. later the towing reinforcement panel is fitted around it. if you look at the towing bracket there is a curve in the plate that runs under the trunk floor. as if the threaded shaft to take the hook extends through the hole and along the underside of the floor connecting securely to the chassis rail. can't see any other purpose for it. |

It's on my car #1095 I don't know what it's for Also on # 1467, 1558 and 2567 Same here. Maybe it was for adding a second tow hook ? It's inline with the left side so.... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) |
