My daughter’s 73 is having a very hard time shifting into reverse and first. A couple years ago I replaced all the bushings down below, but I did not replace anything in the console area.
While going about 2 miles an hour, I can get it into first, but reverse is very difficult. I’ve got it up on jackstands right now and I’m about to put my level one mechanical eye on it. Just thought I’d throw this out in case anyone knows what I need to look for before I get down under Lil’s 914—-again. She’ll be helping me this time. |

Maybe the first place to look is where the front and rear shift rods connect under the rubber boot by the firewall. Is the cone screw loose? Also, check the bushing there and all the bushings back to the transmission.

Be sure that the clutch is disengaging. If out of adjustment, or if the clutch cable tube has broken loose, could be cause of your 1st/reverse problem.

One additional thing to look at are the mounts for the motor and transmission. If these loosen or fail the geometry of the shift rod heading to transmission can change. Look at bushings first, but might also look at the mounts to be certain. I found out about this in Nebraska, returning from the west coast to Wisconsin. |
