One of the first things I remember when i started working on the first one was looking at the clutch pedal and saying to myself, " I'll probably learn why that rod is threaded like that." So clue me in

This sounds reasonable:

"Kinematic Engineering & "Over-Center" Action: The 914 pedal cluster utilizes a heavy assist spring. The clutch needs to be precisely dialed in so that the spring passes an "over-center" point during the first third of its travel. This reduces the physical foot effort required to hold the pedal down. A fixed cast pedal wouldn't allow the precision needed to align the pedal perfectly with this mechanical sweet spot."

Sounds like bad Ai.
The clutch spring is very weak and provides almost no assist. The spring takes up the slack in the cable. It only takes 5-10 pounds of pressure to depress the pedal with a stock pressure plate. The threaded end of the clutch pedal allows for a small amount of height adjustment. The clutch does need to be properly adjusted to minimize the pressure to depress it.

I was reading an answer about this at PCA and he said the over-center has to do with the pressure plate. My bad

You are forgiven

True. Adjustment is at the transmission. It the clutch is out of adjustment more pressure is required. On the pedal set the clutch pedal rests on the rubber stopper so there is no adjustment on the pedals that affect the over the center action.
It is affected if the flywheel is machined and the clutch fork pivot is not shimmerd out properly.

Pretty much every 914 I get in this has not been done correctly on. Shimming the piviot ball makes a night and day difference in clutch feel.
