Finally was able to get under the car for an inspection.
Found one side has a cap on what I believe is the heater control and the other side does not. Am I missing a cap or should only one side have this cap? Oh, Driver side has the cap, Passenger side does not.   |

Missing something? Yes, the cap on the passenger side. Not sure how it came off...

without the cap, i think that it's dumping heat towards the engine

there isn't one. it's part of the heat control valve assembly
