I have a bulb out in the speedometer, so its even darker than it would normally be. I also just replaced a bulb in the tach by pulling out the gauge and being able to reach the bulb (there is just enough room).
But, it seems on the speedo it can't be pulled out enough to reach the bulbs. I assume it's either the speedo cable or the odometer reset cable. Oh, this is a '74. So, what is the best way to get to the bulbs and replace them? Looking a simple solution before I rip apart the dash. Thank you. |

Disconnect the speedometer cable. I replaced all my bulbs with LEDs… except the alternator bulb which has to be incandescent.

Definitely switch to LEDs. It will still be pleasantly dim but still useful.
Unscrew the speedo cable by becoming a contortionist |

As I recall… my Speedo pulled out far enough that I could reach in with a long
Needle nose pliers to loosen it up. Your situation may vary. Good luck. |

Definitely switch to LEDs. It will still be pleasantly dim but still useful. Unscrew the speedo cable by becoming a contortionist So I assume it can be unscrewed by reaching under the dash without removing the lower dash pad? Pretty certain the lower dash pad should be removed ,reach up and free the gauge from the rubber seal in the gauge surround this helps you get to the cable nut and then wiring after that . My experience with LED's was really not that great ,certainly not what i expected ,they don't project light well up the light tubes ,but expect this is better now with modern tech they should be better as this was years ago,i went to LED light strips as I like opening gauges.... Thanks everyone, I found another way without removing the speedo cable. With being able to pull out the speedo about an inch or so, and being able to pull out the Tach, I was able to reach in through the Tach hole and replace the bulb in the speedo.
